The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) on February 11, 2025, issued the Handbook on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Guidelines for Battery Waste.
The following has been stated: -
•The Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022, introduced by the Government of India, address environmental and health risks from improper battery disposal.
•These rules mandate Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), requiring producers, refurbishers, and recyclers to register with the Central and State Pollution Control Boards. Producers must meet recycling and refurbishing targets and use domestically recycled materials in new batteries.
•The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board offers a handbook to help stakeholders understand EPR guidelines. Compliance with the rules is essential for sustainable battery waste management.
